Ian has been in a "fireman" phase. He has been wanting to wear his fireman costume all the time and is always putting out fires. I love to see his imagination at work and encourage him as much as possible.
I also use his love of fire fighting to my advantage. For instance if it's dinner time and Ian is busy playing and isn't particularly interested in coming to eat I'll remind him that "firemen must eat healthy dinners so that they can be strong to fight fires." This was our first family dinner in our new house...
One day we wanted to go out for a ski and Ian wasn't particularly on board with the idea so I told him that there was a forest fire and we needed to ski there to put it out. He donned his fire coat over his snow pants and off we went to extinguish the forest fire! It was fun, and he had a blast. It was also one of his first times on skis and he did really well. He isn't really coordinated enough to go very far yet so we tied his skis to the stroller/sled and gave him a strap to hold on to and off we went. It was quite the train and it worked! Ian hung on for a good 20 minutes before he decided to join Brendan in the stroller. When we wanted to turn around we suddenly spotted the "fire" and used our ski poles as hoses to extinguish it. It was a wonderful adventure and one that I will never forget.
