Brendan turned one month today and gave me the best gift ever... his first real smile. I was standing with him in the kitchen and cheering him on, calling him "Super Baby!" when he gave me the biggest smile! Stephen was standing right there and grabbed the camera for this fabulous picture of our little one's first smile. Precious!
Brendan continues to change by the day. I was calling him super baby because last night was the first night since he was born that he went 3 hours between every feed which meant I only had to wake up twice to feed him... Yeah! He has been a frequent feeder - needing to eat every 30-90 minutes throughout the first month of his life but over the past week he's been starting to stretch it out. He usually is feeding every 2 hours with occasional stretches to every three hours. This is MUCH, MUCH easier and has given me hope. There were a few days about a week ago that I was thinking that he was going to need to eat every 45 minutes for the rest of his life!
What else is he up to? Well, in addition to smiling he's developing some excellent head control and lower body strength. He can lift his head and body off the floor when he is on his tummy and he bears weight with both legs. He's making some early squeaks and peeps - no actual coos yet. He's also much, much more interactive. He loves when we have "bum spa." A diaper change which includes using the hair dryer to dry his little man parts completely. He also enjoys his dips in the tub... usually with Big Brother Ian (Ian loves this too and I look forward to the day when they are both able to share tubby time).
I brought him to the clinic three days ago to check his weight and he was 11# 12 ounces which means that he's been putting on over 2 ounces a day or a pound a week! At this rate it's safe to say that he's over 12 pounds by now... WOW! I guess that's what happens when you eat every 45 minutes throughout the first month of your life!
I continue to be amazed at how different my two boys are already... Ian took a binky when he was four hours old and reluctantly gave it up just before he turned two. Brendan could care less about a binky (but I think I found one that he likes a little more and am hopeful that he will grow fond of it as I found that they are invaluable on plane trips). Ian ate on schedule every 3 hours from the time he was born. Brendan, well, you know what he's been doing. Ian was fussy at night and rarely went to sleep before 11pm. Brendan usually will go to bed with me around 9:00 or 9:30pm and is more likely to be fussy around 5am (although that has been much improved this past week as well). Brendan is losing his hair. I don't remember Ian ever losing his hair. And Ian hated riding in the car and usually would scream the entire time. Brendan cries when we put him in his car seat but then quiets down as soon as the car starts to move.
Although there are lots of differences, there are also a lot of similarities. Both boys have been great at nursing. Neither cared when we introduced a bottle. Both have gained a LOT of weight early on and reached the 97% on their growth curves. And both have been what I call my, "Super Babies!"
Happy One Month Brendan!
