As most of you know, I have an incredibly athletic and talented older sister who has challenged me repeatedly with crazy adventures throughout my life. Perhaps one of the most memorable (and terrifying) memories I have was when I was hanging to a tree on a icy covered cliff that she had told me was a ski slope. Or, there was the time when I was about 5 years old and she strapped some small, red plastic skis to my feet and pushed me down a hill by our house. Well, last week I got to pay her back on a little adventure of my own...
There is a trail in Acadia called the Precipice Trail that is known for being quite challenging. It takes about two hours round-trip and involves scaling up hundreds of feet of cliffs while hanging on to iron bars that have been drilled into the rocks. Stephen and I had climbed the trail a few months ago and Tammy thought it sounded awesome and wanted to climb it too. So, last week Tammy and I headed out to climb the Precipice Trail. There was a man sitting in the parking lot at the base of the trail with binoculars and I quietly informed Tammy that he was there to watch for anyone who falls off the cliff... I thought I was being funny. Tammy wasn't so amused. We headed up the trail and somewhere along the way I learned that in addition to being incredibly athletic and talented my sister is also very brave. She informed me when we were about half-way up the mountain that she doesn't like heights. Hummmm.... She never cried (I cried on several of our "adventures") but she did look a wee bit scared at times. I have to admit that I took a little bit of pleasure in seeing our roles reversed! Anyway, it was an epic day with gorgeous views and is a hike I will never, ever forget.
